Modifying Choking Hazards

Choking is a terrifying thing that can happen to anyone but it can be prevented. We have to take matters into our own hands to help minimize choking incidents, especially in babies and children. While anything (food or objects) can cause choking, we will be discussing foods that pose as a choking hazard. A food that increases the risk of choking is considered a choking hazard.

How can choking be prevented?

  • Modifying choking hazards appropriately
  • Always eat meals and snacks while sitting at a table
  • Avoid laying down while eating
  • Become CPR Certified and encourage caregivers, as well

The following foods are choking hazards. These foods can get lodged in the throat and block the airway. This does not mean that the food itself is completely off limits, they just need to be modified appropriately. If a food cannot be modified, it is best to avoid it. These choking hazards are for children under the age of four per the Academy of American Pediatrics (AAP). If your child requires a modified textured diet due to swallowing/feeding disorders please speak with your feeding therapist regarding certain modifications. Information above per the AAP can be viewed here , and per the CDC here.
